Navigating Faith and Business: Insights from Todd Hopkins on Leadership, Stress Management, and Discipleship

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

I had the opportunity to exchange a few questions via email with Todd Hopkins, who served as the keynote speaker at the 27th North American KCBMC Conference in Washington DC. Hopkins left a profound impression on attendees with his presentation on “Life on Life Discipleship: The Call, The Cost, and The Commitment.” Notably, he received praise for challenging participants to humbly lay down their own resolutions to live for Christ and instead make the confession, “Christ, live through me,” thus prompting a sensitive reflection on the meaning of surrendering the ownership of one’s life to Christ and practicing complete obedience.

Here is a brief introduction and an email interview with Todd Hopkins.

Todd Hopkins, CEO of Office Pride, a prominent cleaning company with over 100 franchises nationwide, integrates strategic business acumen with Biblical principles in his acclaimed books such as “The Janitor: Five Wisdoms for Entrepreneurial Survival”, “The Carrot Chaser”, “The Stress Less Business Owner”, and “Stop Using the B Word”. Through these influential works, Todd not only delves into stress management and sustainable business practices but also champions effective leadership rooted in faith, fostering joy and success among business owners globally.

Many people attended Todd Hopkins’s book signing.

Q: The meaning of being busy seems to differ between older generations and the younger generation nowadays. What does being busy mean to you, and how would you convey this to both groups?

A: Here is my definition of BUSY: The state of having misguided activities with unclear goals or purpose often used as an excuse for not being focused on important priorities.  I see people of all ages struggling with this. The difference is in what they choose to keep themselves busy. Ultimately Busyness kills our ability to achieve goals and purpose. All age groups need to be consciously aware that they are choosing busyness over productivity, and then make the choice to stop using the “B” word or letting it define them.  Replace it with the word “productive”.

Q: Sometimes, being a Christian business owner can feel like an invisible burden, especially when it comes to evangelism. You may feel the need to hold back your anger and always show your best side. What advice would you give to Christian business owners who feel this way?

A: What a blessing we have first to be secure in our own salvation, and then to have the opportunity to live it out in front of others.  The key is to not carry any burden, but to let Jesus handle that through us.  Just be available and willing.  Takes the pressure off.

Q: It is said that there is healthy stress, which serves as a motivating force for improvement. How can one distinguish between healthy stress and unhealthy stress?

A: If it is taking a toll on your personal physical or mental health, it is unhealthy. Some people do operate well under stress, but you must know your limits.

Q: When Christians experience stress, they may sometimes feel as if they lack the fullness of the Holy Spirit or that their faith is insufficient. How would you address someone who comes to you with these concerns?

A:  I would ask them who they are relying on as their power source, themselves or God?  If they are believers, they have the Holy Spirit.  The question is how much are they yielding to the Spirit?  I would suggest they spend some time praying and yielding.  By the way, the short cut for eliminating stress is worship.  When we fully worship and have our eyes on Jesus, we do not stress.   Stress comes when we focus on ourselves.

하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 하심이니라 (요 3:16).
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. (John 3:16 NIV)
